Questions are the most powerful tool you have regarding your health.
During my four years of chronic sickness, I visited multiple hospitals and interacted with many different doctors. Every doctor looked for the same thing: symptom similarity to land on a diagnosis. It was evident that something was horribly wrong with my digestive system and hormones, but the conversation never included finding the why. Instead, my visits constantly included words like, GERD? Ulcers? Crohn's?
I wasn’t opposed to knowing which part of my body had gone array, but I was concerned with why no one seemed interested in why my body was failing me. For example, one of my many issues included a diagnosis of Acid Reflux. The answer? Antacids and PPIs. For starters, these only gave me temporary relief, not to mention the slew of side effects that came with the medication. Second, it seemed as though everything had been solved because we “figured out what was wrong.” Figuring out what is wrong, however, is not a diagnosis of Acid Reflux, a slab of drugs, and then moving on; in my case, figuring out what is wrong should have looked like diving into why my lower esophageal sphincter became weak and evaluating how to strengthen the muscle for lasting healing from the malfunction.
We need to stop naming and taming symptoms and actually look at the root cause of why we are sick. The diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, for example, is not an answer as to why you are tired. The answer as to why you are tired rests in discovering the root cause: sedentary lifestyle, insulin resistance, heavy metal exposure, vitamin deficiency, etc. And then, we address the root of the issue head on.
Sedentary lifestyle? Get active.
Insulin resistance? Diet change and lifestyle reform.
Heavy metal exposure? Detox.
Vitamin deficiency? Supplement.
It is devastating that so many Americans deal with chronic pains, sickness, and general discomfort on a daily basis, and they think their only hope is taking drugs to manage their symptoms. Natural health is not about managing; it is about addressing the root cause of your cellular dysfunction and restoring what has gone wrong, so that you can thrive!
At the very least, I am asking you to just start asking questions. Why am I sick? What are the side effects of this drug? Why do I do the same things over and over and not achieve any lasting change?
And to really get you thinking:
Why does Europe have a ban on over 300 chemicals that the U.S allows in grocery stores?
Why are 8 out of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S related to high blood sugar?
Why are 77% of young people in America unfit for military service?
Why are 74% of American adults overweight or obese?
We have to take our health back, and it begins with one question at a time. We must strive to understand our bodies as systems, as opposed to isolated parts that work independent of each other.
Natural health evaluates the whole person–mind, body, and soul–to discover the root cause of sub-optimal health. I believe God’s handiwork is beyond evident in the way our bodies have been created to defend and repair themselves, and it is up to us to educate ourselves on what is healthful or harmful to our cells, in order to steward the lives we’ve been entrusted with.
